AI Technology: A Friend or Foe in the Classroom?

While there is excitement in the novelty of what AI can provide in terms of education, there have been numerous concerns raised as well. AI may well become a significant tool in the classroom, but its implementation will be problematic if policy makers and experts don't also consider the possible harm it could do.

To start, consider some real world classroom problems with AI. In this video, journalist Joanna Stern, goes back to highschool to see if ChatGPT can help her pass AP Literature.

The video discusses one of the most prevalent and currently pressing problems with AI technologies: cheating. This video demonstrates how AI tools like ChatGPT can cause problems for both teachers and students.
While ChatGPT makes it difficult for teachers to catch cheating due to the sophisticated writing style and ability to use specific information, its not a fool-proof technology.

The video also demonstrates how AI tools like ChatGPT can cause problems as they learn through absorption of data without much ability to discern context or misattribution of fact.
Beyond the classroom, there are global concerns around burgeoning AI technologies.
In this video, Professor Scott Galloway discusses general and pressing concerns around the use of AI technologies.

Galloway acknowledges the harm that AI may incur upon education, such as with cheating. He also laments that students who use AI technologies will miss opportunities to develop critical thinking skills. Furthermore, he predicts the beginning of an "arms race" around creation of AI recognition tools for cheating.

Despite this, his major concern in regards to AI technologies are its abilities to spread misinformation while sounding completely believable. He notes that this could create a scary world with further political instability.
