Siri is an artificial intelligence voice assistant (AIVA) that has been integrated into Apple Inc.’s operating system (OS), originally released in 2011 with iOS 5. It responds to queries or demands utilizing voice and gesture based inputs. Although slightly different in nature and implementation, Siri, Alexa, Cortana, and numerous other smart assistants have been made popular by their primary feature: voice-based interactions. Siri itself originates from an offshoot of the CALO project. CALO stands for Cognitive Assistant that Learns and Organizes, so it makes sense that an offshoot of this project would eventually make its way into the form of a virtual assistant. It was part of a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) project under its Personalized Assistant that Learns (PAL) program in 2003. This program that would eventually lead to the spin-off that would become Siri, was focusing on generating an AI that could learn and organize.
